Elevator, Escalator and Lift Accident Reporting

Under ORS 460.045(7), Building Codes Division requires that when an elevator, escalator or lift accident is caused by the equipment or when an injured person needs hospital care:

• The equipment must be shut down immediately;
• The Chief Elevator Inspector must be called on the 24-hour accident line, 503-991-8977; and,
• The equipment may not be altered, repaired or put back into service until it has been examined by a state elevator inspector.

Building Codes Division tracks any accident that occurs on elevators, escalators, lifts or other equipment regulated by the Oregon Elevator Safety program. To report accidents and injuries to people or service animals:

An Elevator Accident Report must be filed with the division.

This process does not supersede any other law or rule requirements such as reporting to the appropriate insurer or OR-OSHA in the event of a work place injury.
