Safety Break set for May 8

Oregon OSHA's annual Safety Break for Oregon is coming up next month. This year's Safety Break marks the event's 10th year – for those of you who didn't know about it, Safety Break is a one-day event designed to raise awareness and promote workplace safety.

Safety Break encourages employees and management to work together to make their workplaces safer, which can lead to fewer injuries and reduced workers' compensation costs for employers. Your Safety Break can be as short as a 15-minute discussion about hazards where you work or as extravagant as you want to make it. In past years, employers have hosted safety demonstrations, award recognition events, and training.

“We invite employers to get creative and have fun while focusing on safety and health issues," said Michael Wood, Oregon OSHA administrator. "This is an opportunity to celebrate safety achievements or start a conversation around improving on-the-job safety."

Companies planning to participate will be entered to win one of three $100 pizza luncheons when they sign up online by Friday, May 3. The prizes will be given to participating companies as part of a random drawing. The Oregon SHARP Alliance is sponsoring the contest.

Did you know?

Oregon OSHA created Safety Break in 2003 at the urging of industry leaders concerned about an increase in workplace deaths in the state during 2002. But Safety Break had a little-known predecessor, which debuted 29 years earlier. Called the First Occupational Safety and Health Awareness Day, the April 1979 event was organized by Mt. Hood Community College's Trades and Service Occupations Division to “get all Oregon employers and employees to place special emphasis on safety for one work day in their plant, shop, or office.?
