Oregon OSHA offers no-cost safety training in Jackson County
The Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Division (Oregon OSHA) will
be offering several no-cost training sessions to employers and workers
in Ashland and Medford during July and August.
ASHLAND
July 29, 2003
Safety Leadership 8:00am to Noon
Hearing Conservation Program 1:00pm to 5:00pm
"Safety Leadership" will show participants how to build strong
working relationships between workers and management, relationships that
create safer workplaces. Persons interested in attending this workshop
should already have completed Oregon OSHA's 'Safety and Health Management'
class and 'Effective Safety Supervision' class.
"Hearing Conservation Program" is a workshop that introduces
an effective approach to preserving the sense of hearing throughout a
lifetime of work and play. Elements of an effective hearing conservation
program, how sound damages hearing, and actions to take to prevent hearing
loss will be discussed in this workshop.

What to Expect from an OR-OSHA Inspection 8:00am to Noon
Ergonomics in the Office 1:00pm to 5:00pm
"What to Expect From an OR-OSHA Inspection" helps clear up
some misconceptions about Oregon OSHA, and how an OR-OSHA compliance officer
conducts an inspection or investigation on a worksite, including the rights
and responsibilities of both employers and employees.
"Ergonomics in the Office" is an introduction to the basic principles
of ergonomics in an office environment. Learn about health considerations,
workstation evaluation, selecting the correct video display terminal and
preventing cumulative trauma.
The Ashland training classes will be held at the Southern Oregon University
campus in Room 330 of the Stephenson Union Building. To register

Safety Committee Training 9:00am - Noon
The safety committee training workshop will educate safety committee
members about their duties and responsibilities, training requirements
and the purpose of safety committees. The class will also review the mandatory
'Rules for All Workplaces' in Oregon, and how to solve safety and health
problems using a safety committee. This workshop meets Oregon OSHA requirements
for basic Hazard Identification and Accident Investigation training.

· Back Safety
· Violence in the Workplace
· Personal Protective Equipment
All three one-hour courses are presented during one class session, giving
employers an opportunity to select the areas where they need additional
training. The "Back Safety" course helps employers identify
ergonomic risk factors associated with back injuries and introduces methods
to control those risks. "Violence in the Workplace" includes
topics regarding assessment, de-escalation of potentially violent situations
in the workplace, and employer responsibilities. The "Personal Protective
Equipment" course gives participants an overview of employer requirements
for the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in the workplace. Topics
include information about hazard assessment to determine needed PPE and
suggested methods for protecting the head, face, hands, feet, and torso.
The Medford training classes will be held at the Rogue Valley Mall Educational
Resource Center, 1600 North Riverside in Medford. To register

Safety for Small Business
The Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Division (Oregon OSHA) designed
the 'Safety for Small Business' program to help small business owners
implement safety and health management concepts in their workplace. The
program consists of two one-hour "brown bag" workshops. Participants
bring their own lunches and Oregon OSHA provides workshop materials for
participants. The workshop is free.
The Safety for Small Business workshop is presented in two phases. Attendance
is required at the first meeting to participate in the Phase Two meeting
two weeks later. Participants will learn how to integrate a safety and
health program into their business plan, receive industry-specific resource
materials, and be introduced to the program's ten short duration safety
and health training modules.
The workshop will be presented in Medford on August 7, 2003 at the Rogue
Valley Mall Educational Resource Center, 1600 North Riverside in Medford.
The Phase Two class is scheduled for August 21, 2003. To register
